Definition

'Study Support [out of school hours learning] is learning activity outside normal lessons which young people take part in voluntarily. Study Support is, accordingly, an inclusive term, embracing many activities - with many names and guises. Its purpose is to improve young people’s motivation, build their self-esteem and help them become more effective learners. Above all it aims to raise achievement’.

Minimum standards for providers

Minimum Standards for providers of Study Support and Out of School Hours Learning activities is a guide for Local Authorities aimed at organisations wishing to deliver activities for children and young people outside normal school hours.

This explanatory leaflet and provider checklist has been developed within the Eastern Region, with the support of QiSS and on behalf of the DCSF. It conforms to commissioning guidelines for Hertfordshire and is offered as a tool to help you encourage all existing, as well as potential, providers of SSOSHL activities meet the minimum standards expected of them.

Hard copies of the leaflet are available from your ESCO, District Partnership team or Room 147 at County Hall.

The provider checklist is available in word document format and designed to be used as an aide memoire when engaging providers. The checklist can be downloaded to your own computer for use as and when you need it. You are encouraged to continue with any existing system you are using to record and monitor providers. If you have no existing system then you might like to adopt this checklist as the basis of any system you develop.
