What is an Extended School?
Extended Schools provide a range of services and activities, often beyond the school day to help meet the needs of children and young people, their families and the wider community.
The Department for Children, Schools and Families has set out a core offer of extended services which they want to be in place by 2010. The core offer for mainstream and special schools is:
- A varied menu of activities, including study support, sport and music clubs, combined with childcare in primary schools.
- Parenting support including parenting programmes, family learning and other forms of support for parents.
- Swift and easy access to information on specialist support systems and the Common Assessment Framework process.
- Wider community access to school facilities including ICT, sports and arts facilities and adult learning opportunities.
Will all schools have to offer all these services?
The services may not be available in all schools, but all schools should have access to them through The Gade Extended Schools Consortium. This consortium will work closely with children and young people and their families to shape these services around the needs of their communities.
The Gade Extended Schools Consortium has a duty to safeguard children and the needs of the child remain of central importance. Therefore at any time, if there are concerns about a child, staff may need to share information with other agencies.
The Gade Extended Schools Consortium does not endorse or recommend any of the external organisations,
services or information listed on its website. We cannot guarantee at any time that all the
information is up to date and accurate. The Gade Extended Schools Consortium cannot accept liability for
misleading or inaccurate information or omissions in information given to us by external information providers.
