Parenting is arguably one of the most difficult and important jobs in the world, but one for which we are often least prepared and supported. It can be a rewarding and happy experience. There are also times of difficulty and worry. There is no ‘right’ way to parent, each one of us has unique circumstances which affect our parenting. Each child is also very different, and what will ‘work’ for one child may not ‘work’ for another. The Extended Schools team is in place to help support both parents/Guardians, along with your children as they progress through school – from foundation stage through to secondary years.

Your Parent Support Worker is here to support you with any concerns you may be facing with your child at home or at school. Your issues may be varied, for example :

♦ Changing Schools (transition phase) ♦ Loss or bereavement
♦ General routines (bedtime, eating) ♦ Financial Concerns

♦ Communicating with your child

♦ Housing Concerns
♦ Being in an abusive relationship ♦ Family breakdowns
♦ Managing challenging behaviour ♦ Internet Safety
♦ Temperamental teenagers ♦ Bullying

♦ Helping with my child’s learning

♦ Issues with friendships
♦ Issues with smoking, drugs or alcohol ♦ Finding time for yourselves

Did you know that in primary aged children, parental involvement is more important to a child’s achievement and adjustment, than the quality of the school they attend?

PARENTS INTEREST ‘...... Parental interest in their child’s education has four times more influence on attainment at 16 than socio-economic background....’ Feinstein, L & Symons, J (199). Attainment in secondary school. Oxford Economic Papers, 51, 300-321

PARENTS INFLUENCE ON CHILDREN’S LIFE CHANCES ‘At-home good parenting’ has a bigger effect on children’s achievement at primary level than differences in quality of schools, evident across all social classes and all ethnic groups.... Charles Desforges. The Impact of Parental Involvement, Parental Support and Family Education On Pupil Achievement and Adjustment, DfES Research, R433 (2003)
