Extended Opportunities for Children and Young People
A scheme offering funding to disadvantaged children in Hertfordshire is being piloted at five extended schools consortia from the summer, The funding is known nationally as the extended schools disadvantage subsidy but here in Hertfordshire it is called Extended Opportunities funding.
Extended Opportunities is part of the government’s drive to improve attainment and well being through extended activities. Funding has been allocated to schools to enable vulnerable children and young people who are also disadvantaged by economic circumstances, to access the varied menu of activities of the extended schools agenda. The main objective of the pilot is to ensure that children take part in activities that can help children to stay fit and active, make new friends, learn new skills and gain confidence.
The Extended Opportunities scheme is being piloted by five extended schools consortia in the county. These are:
- SchoolsPlus (West Watford)
- Churchgate (Broxbourne)
- Hatfield & Rural
- Stevenage South
- St Albans South
Extended Opportunities will be rolled out county wide from June 2010. The report on the Pilot Study is available below.
