Young Carers
On Thursday, 7th October, 2010, Rev Morris from the Bunyan Baptist Church in Basils Road, was pleased to host a very special gathering from local schools. 58 visitors including school staff, children and young people watched as the mayor of Stevenage, Councillor Michael Downing and John Tillbrook, a former Young Carer and student at Marriotts School, unveiled a beautiful fabric wall-hanging. This had been created by Young Carers in Stevenage who belong to school support groups. Also pictured is Adrienne Arthurs, Extended Schools’ Co-ordinator from North Stevenage Consortium who has supported the development of Young Carers since first meeting John in 2005. Currently, over 250 children and young people aged 8-18 years who are in a caring role within their own families, have been identified and offered help
What is a Young Carer?
"Young Carers are children or young people who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a mental health problem or a substance misuse problem. Young carers take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult."
Schools are now offering support; such as drop ins, meetings, activities, homework or just someone there who knows what it means to be a young carer. Does your school offer this support?
There are now 4 Young Carers Youth Clubs available across Stevenage, which are free to attend and are attended exclusively by young carers. To attend these term time clubs you can complete the referral form and contact Jane Penney (aged 8 to 13 years) via email janepenney@nobel.herts.sch.uk or on 01438 222600 or Ian Marchant (aged 13 to 19) on 01438 219400.
